Audio version — MOC Comparison: Choosing the Right Pump Material for Your Application

Selecting the right Material of Construction (MOC) is critical for ensuring long pump life, optimal performance, and safety in industrial operations. This guide compares three widely used materials in AODD pumps — Polypropylene (PP), Stainless Steel 316 (SS-316), and Aluminium (AL) — each suited for specific applications.

Quick MOC Comparison at a Glance

Property PP (Polypropylene) SS-316 (Stainless Steel) AL (Aluminium)

Abrasion Resistance ⚠ Moderate ✔ High ⚠ Moderate
Outdoor Use ✘ Not Recommended ✔ Suitable ✔ Suitable
Ease of Maintenance ✔ Easy ⚠ Moderate ✔ Easy
1. Polypropylene (PP)

PP – Best for Acids & Aggressive Chemicals

PP pumps are ideal for handling acids and aggressive chemicals due to their excellent corrosion resistance. They are lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to maintain. However, they are limited in temperature handling (up to ~70°C) and are not suitable for abrasive or high-temperature applications.

A higher grade variant, PPH (Polypropylene Homopolymer), can be used for applications up to ~85°C, offering a slight performance advantage in warmer process environments.

Important Note: Since PP is brittle in nature, it is not recommended for open or outdoor installations. UV exposure and physical impact can cause premature cracking.
Typical Applications: Acid dosing, chemical transfer, electroplating, water treatment, pharmaceutical fluid transfer.
2. Stainless Steel 316 (SS-316)

SS-316 – Best for Solvents & High-Temperature Fluids

SS-316 pumps are widely used for solvents and high-temperature fluids. With excellent product life and high abrasion resistance, they are suitable for demanding applications such as cement, paint, and heavy industrial processes.

The main trade-offs are higher cost and heavier weight compared to other materials, which may increase installation and handling complexity.

Typical Applications: Solvent transfer, paint and ink manufacturing, cement slurry, food processing, high-temperature fluid transfer.
3. Aluminium (AL)

AL – Best for Oil, Gas & General Fluids

Aluminium pumps are typically used for oil, gas, and water-based chemicals. They offer a balance of moderate cost, good strength, and decent temperature resistance — making them a practical choice for general industrial use.

However, aluminium has lower corrosion resistance compared to PP and SS-316, making it less suitable for highly aggressive or acidic chemicals.

Typical Applications: Oil transfer, LPG, diesel, lubricants, general water-based chemicals, mining, and construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does MOC mean in pumps?

MOC stands for Material of Construction. In pumps, it refers to the material used to build the pump body, impeller, and wetted parts that come in contact with the fluid. Choosing the right MOC ensures chemical compatibility, longer pump life, and safe operation.

Which pump material is best for handling acids?

Polypropylene (PP) is the best material for handling acids and aggressive chemicals. PP pumps handle temperatures up to 70°C, and PPH grade up to 85°C. They are also lightweight and cost-effective, making them widely used across Indian industries.

Which AODD pump MOC is best for solvents?

Stainless Steel 316 (SS-316) is the preferred material for solvents and high-temperature fluids. It offers excellent product life and high abrasion resistance suitable for demanding industrial processes like paint, cement slurry, and heavy chemicals.

Is aluminium suitable for chemical pumping?

Aluminium pumps are suitable for oil, gas, and water-based chemicals. However, they have lower corrosion resistance compared to PP and SS-316, making them less suitable for highly aggressive or acidic chemicals. They are a practical mid-range cost option for general industrial use.
